Emergency & Medical Rides

Emergency Ride to Campus Program

The Emergency Ride to Campus (ERC) program provides students the benefit of an emergency ride back to campus if transportation options (e.g., public transit or private vehicle) are unavailable. Freshmen without a parking permit can use the service up to three (3) times per semester. All other students can access the ERC program up to three (3) times per academic year. Any charges related to the misuse of the program will be charged to the individual student’s UNC-Asheville account.

If Asheville Transit services can be utilized to return to campus, the ERC ride cannot be used.

To request an ERC taxi ride, call University Police at 828.232.5000.

Students must have a current Passport sticker affixed to their RockyCard to participate in the ERC program. Student must contact Campus Police for the ERC program.

MedCab Program

MedCab allows students without access to, or who are unable to use a vehicle, a FREE taxi ride to a designated medical facility. The MedCab program is available for emergencies, when all other transportation options (biking, walking, carpooling, or public transit) are not feasible.

How Med Cab Works

When a medical emergency arises, call:

  • Student Health Services 828.251.6520 or
  • Student Health and Counseling Center 828.251.6517
  • University Police 828.232.5000

One of these offices must call for the Med Cab taxi and authorize its use. The office authorizing the ride should also be contacted for the return trip, if applicable.

You must have your RockyCard available. The taxi driver will have you read and sign an invoice. Your only cost is a ‘suggested’ tip to the taxi driver: students will not be charged for MedCab service.

Students must have a current Passport sticker affixed to their RockyCard to participate in the MedCab program
